Phone/Gadget free shows - Yondr pouch?

Not a Jack White fan at all, but I can totally agree with him. Hell, in my small-time oldies band, watching the audience watching through their phones is a real bummer. I couldn't imagine playing an arena or theater and dealing with it. But if we're being honest, I couldn't imagine playing a theater or arena in a small-time oldies band anyways!!
Lock up those phones. By holding the phone over your head and filming, you are A: producing poor-quality footage that nobody will watch, B: taking pictures that you will never look at again (like all those 4th of July fireworks pictures), C: annoying the audience around you, D: annoying the artist, E: missing out on what I consider to be the best part of being at a concert! If you want to watch them through a 4 inch screen, watch them on YouTube on your phone.
And I'm no old-timer. I'm 29 (and I LOVE my phone... just not at a concert)

Yeah, I get that too. Even in my line of work (real estate), where I kinda need to be accessible "at all a times", I have begun to implement phone free time.

It's on "do not disturb" and upstairs on a charger during family meals, for example. Whatever it is, it can wait.

Thing with this system for venues is that people can keep it with them, and go to a zone within the venue to unlock it (say, to call their parents, or the reverse, call the babysitter, whatever, check voice mail).

I think it's a good solution.

My phone stays on Do Not Disturb, the only people who can get through it are my family members and my girlfriend. Everyone else can wait. It's been very helpful for me.

Approaching geezer age, if I haven't already hit it. I like the ability to snap a few pictures at a show. I try to keep it low key and not a distraction to other concert goers. I see no point in recording audio or video with a phone at a show. Shortly after acquiring my first smart phone I tried video recording once at a Mayhem festival and Slayer sounded like absolute garbage on the replay later at home for my brief recording of Angel of Death due to the inadequacies of the phone.

Later at shows I realized I didn't want to be the guy with his phone in the air possibly blocking someone's view or becoming a distraction to others around me. Which at some shows that I have attended has become the norm for a good portion of the crowd holding phones up high and recording away.

So, I have no problem with the occasional picture being snapped. But, the people with the phones held up for the whole show, please put them away.

Also, I have no problem with phones being banned from shows.

Yup, I like being able to snap a couple photos, but god, every show I go to these days there's a couple of big dudes standing in front of everyone with their phones on THE WHOLE TIME. I went to a show a few weeks ago where a guy was live-streaming it on Facebook. "0 people viewing this" was very prominently displayed on the screen. C'mon, man.

If I go to a show, I don't even pull my phone out of my pocket anywhere it could be an annoyance to my fellow audience members.

I have no problem with measures up to, and including throwing people out for it, and I have nothing against artists who choose this approach. However, I don't pay money for a show to be treated like a child, and I choose not to go to any show with a policy like this.

This exactly. I don't go to many big concerts because I find too many of the people there annoying as hell, even without their phones. If I do go, I want to be able to read and respond to a text from someone if I need to and I don't want to have to go to the lobby to do it. I am capable of using my phone without bothering anyone, so bugger off.

Eh. If i pay for a ticket......dance monkey dance. It doesnt bother me how other people watch a show. Im not there to watch other people. Should people not talk bc its distracting to the performer?

Like @Oddly was sorta saying, back when you could do almost anything at a concert except, film, record, take pictures. Even after the anything goes years died, they still watched hard for any of that going on.
I saw Puddles The Clown recently, and they encouraged people to record all they wanted.
I know I can't stand when someone post a terrible video of our band. We're bad enough without a poor video making it worse.

I know JW has had some rants at shows about phones, but I get the sense the venue is already setnupmformthisnsort of thing, and that it's not exclusive to JW. Could be wrong, and for the purposes of this thread, somewhat irrelevant.

My question is, what do you all think about this?

Although I can’t stand cellphones at concerts I don’t like the idea of granting that amount of unilateral authority over me to someone just to see their show. Nor do I appreciate being treated like an unruly child just because they’ve got a bug up their tail about something.

So while I can understand the motivation behind it, I’d still pass on going to a show with that rule in place.

Yep we’re doomed I work in app design. These things are designed to be addictive. The hot talk in the industry is about giving people “little endorphin rushes”. It’s all based on game theory, which are designed to keep people “playing” at all costs. If you ever got addicted to a game, you know where that leads.

I was mixing FOH at about a 600 seater. The band was super hot, the lighting was excellent, everything for a good evening of entertainment.
About 40% of the women were on their phones throughout the evening. Not taking pics, or recording the band. They were texting...ALL NIGHT!
A) It's really f'in rude. To the band, to the venue, to your date/other. B) Why the hell did they pay $35???
I'm all for another ticket sold, money for the entertainers, venue, crew.... STILL, they should just stay home.
