Started with PS2, then PS4, and have been using PS7 for years. The cost of the app is beyond what I'm willing to pay for the new versions considering I use it for entertainment (lately mostly to skin tanks for World of Tanks, these are not used by the publisher of the game, I share them for free).
You can still get the student price if you're in high school.
RE: GIMP
I used GIMP a lot more before I started shooting in RAW. Unfortunately the only RAW plugin that works with GIMP is UFRAW, which is absolutely terrible compared to nonfree programs. Now I prefer to make most of my color/contrast/exposure/sharpening/noise reduction adjustments in another program while pics are still in RAW format (such as Lightroom). Then is something that needs to be removed from the pic or whatnot I do that in GIMP. The results are far better than just doing those things to a jpeg in GIMP.
