PHRASING!!!!!!

I am studying jazz.. I think i can handle all the scale information, and "knowing the correct" note to play in an standard. The problem I have encountered is my phrasing! it basically sucks..

PLEASE! HELP! post phrasing exercises!! or tell me any advice about this!! what technical things can help me? what things have helped you!? thanks...

Phrasing is an great study to get into. Try this for an exercise... When your soloing, play a phrase (this could be based on a certain rhythm or could be based on an intervalic idea etc). Now when you play your next phrase make sure it has some relevance to the last phrase you just played. So, if your first phrase was based on a rhythmical idea, the next phrase would be a similar rhythm but maybe an extenuated version of it. If you think of it just been the same as speaking... each sentence you say (hopefully ) relates to what you have just said previously etc etc.

This stuff is a little tough when you first get into in but you'll soon get the hang of it. I've got a lessons website you could check out but at the moment there's no phrasing tutorials on it, but... i'm right in the middle of doing a re-design and adding lots of new content that will include phrasing exercises etc.

In the meantime... there's a great Jerry Bergonzi book called 'melodic Rhythms', it's got loads of phrasing exercises in so maybe you could check that out.
