Just judging from what I've learned about languages in my spare time, Francesco being originally Italian just sounded a little bit fishy to me...what I dug up on the interwebz was about the same thing your sources are saying

Nope didn't mean to quote either of you. If a name has a Latin root does it neccesarily have to Italian as well?
 
My understanding of the way the name Francisco entered Spanish is that they simply needed a way of saying Saint Francis, who was an Italian actually named Francesco. I studied Italian and my understanding was that at the time of Saint Francis' life and in his particular Italian dialect, Francesco meant Frenchman. The modern Italian word is Francese.
