Ok, I think I'm finally starting to figure out my Jazz bass, it seems that rolling of the pups just a tad gives it a cleaner thumping sound that sounds good with a pick, and having the pups full on works well with fingers.

If you turn the neck pup up & the bridge pup down, w/ the tone all the way up, imho it sounds like a p bass.
