pick too heavy?

So after being told many times by different people I've decided that maybe I should seek help. Apparently my picking style is too heavy and causes an unfavorable sound for those recording me/my band mates. The problem is when I try to pick lighter I either mess up entirely what I'm trying to play or I don't really let up on how heavy I pick.
I know there's gotta be other heavy pickers out there, does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can achieve this? And no I won't play with my fingers and I have tries using lighter gauged picks

Different MATERIAL. Celluoid picks are hard and will drive your bass into that twangy funky over drive sound much quicker than resin picks. Resin picks bend around the same amount as celluoid picks with the same thickness, but they aren't as springy. Resin picks are sold at Wal-mart since they are cheap to make and you might be able to get some high quality ones off the net or at a local music shop. Also, if you down strum mostly and get some of those resin picks, try bending them at the tip so they are curved. This give a lighter attack and sounds more like your fingers.

Heck, I've even used picks made from wood and some made from counter top laminate haha. Don't be afraid to think outside the box
