The "punk's down stroke" is a technique for a desired sound. This is an interesting observation and possibly the substance of why im asking. Thanks
I think you're off by several decades. I used to get that attitude when I was a teenager starting to play in the 70's. I was a Squire wannabe, so I faced the ire of some narrow-minded guitarists. But since then? Man, pickstyle bass is as ubiquitous as fingerstyle. Especially in the session world. Imagine getting a session call from a Rick Rubin, Mark Ronson, Don Was, and the like, and they say "try this tune with a pick", and you say...."no"..... There's a "real bassists don't use picks" philosophy thats appeared in the past decade
I learned with a pick in the late 70s, continued with one into the mid 90s, got more into fingerstyle and haven't used one since. When I gave it a go recently I found I was absolutely hopeless! This is a research inquiry for an upcoming video on my YouTube channel.....
I'd like feedback on pick useage on bass. The reasoning is that pick useage was a very accepted practice for decades, especially in the 80s and 90s, but they seem to have become a bit of an albatross over the past decade and Im trying to find out why. There's a "real bassists don't use picks" philosophy thats appeared in the past decade and there's even memes out about it
Personally, I have zero issue with picks, plus I love the tone
comments arent necessary - just a poll vote is appreciated

Chill man.. it's not a bad thread.I may PM some of you to get permission to quote for the video
Thank you all again
Mods, in case you missed my earlier request , please remove thread. Thank you
ThisI only play fretless with flats and never use a pick. I like quite a few bassist who do though.
What is it you're asking to vote on anyway? Finger or pick should be up to the player, whatever kind of tone or effect they're looking for. Don't think it should be one or the other. Best if players can do both, I think. So, I decline to vote. This is a research inquiry for an upcoming video on my YouTube channel........- just a poll vote is appreciated
