Pickup Cost?

To throw my thoughts at the original question. Pick Up pricing sounds like this
$5 - parts
$150 - knowing how to stick them together and make it work right.

I think it's more than $5 for parts. But yes, you are paying for the design know how, more than the labor. If the design is unusual, then you can't shop around for price as much as with something like Jazz pickups, and even then, for a fairly simple design, they can all sound quite different from each other.

Sometimes it's based on the reputation as well as the quality. One well know builder wants $800 for active replacement pickups and electronics, and they really are not worth more than something like EMGs, as far as what they cost to make.
 
Oh my buddy can do the CAD work.... he does it in SolidWorks.

Yeah - keep a look out for some small job shop kinds of places. You can usually get them to do low priority work in their slow times pretty darn cheap - and right now is definitely one of those times for lots of folks.
