What's the distance between an ashtray bridge cover and a bridge pickup cover on vintage jazz basses? Are they centered on the pole pieces?

Yes, just center it up. No magic space formula. The early jazzes the bridge pup was only half covered by the ashtray, then later they moved the pup closer to the bridge.
