So it's a great bass in terms of great to wear and play for three sets and great looks. Just got it "as new" used, and it's truly as new. Love the bass though not crazy about the tone at the moment. The J pickup is a little noisy; ok for gigs though not the studio.
After searching and reading a lot it seems the Aguilar PJ-HC set is a top candidate. Looking for top of the line vintage sound. Not aggressive modern, just great vintage. Note that I put a SD vintage SPB-1 in an E series '85 MIJ P and I love that sound; records well too. The EMG GZRs look like a possibility though I don't see a need to change the pots in this new bass.
Haven't replaced the strings yet, and yes I know that's a good place to start. I usually end up with Chromes on my gig basses; right now this Lakie is wearing new GHS Boomers which haven't yet calmed down.
For gigs I use a Mesa D800 head and AudioKinesis cabs.
So questions for this PJ:
Keep the stock pickups?
Anybody recommend the Aggies? Or say skip them?
Anybody think the GZR PJs with the new pots are better than just replacing pickups.
