Pickup winding

Hi,


I'm thinking about winding my own pickups (not right away! ) I don't know where I can get the copper, magnets, stuff like that. Where do you get it and how do you make/wind them???!??! How did you learn to wind pickups if you do. Also, would I have to change anything (winding wise) to make it active?

Have a look at http://www.stewmac.com/ and http://www.lmii.com/ for supplies.

There are plenty of tutorials around both on the forum and elsewhere. Search around

Making them active just involves wiring them up with a preamp. Do some research around the topic if you need.

I looked into winding pups a long time ago but I could buy them a lot cheaper and felt a long-shot to improve on what's been done - not to mention I could be playing them instead of making them. But I was thinking in practical terms not looking for a hobbie or I may have thought different.

Active pups have an internal preamp and any I've seen are epoxy potted - not a beginner project.

indeed all the stuff you need is available on stewmac. they dont have 1 inch magnets though (exposed poles), and for some very odd reason the .688 are half the price of the .710.... very awkward. They also have tons of good info on their 'free information' section. Schatten makes a nice winder, I have yet to try it though, my buddy says it works great. they also sell copper and a few things. If you aint willin to spend the big bucks for a winder, you can definitely make your own, variable speed motor and a reed switch is basically what you need.

My tutorial mentioned above could be a good start to show you what I went through to build my first pickup but don't use it as a base to build a Musicman pickup. It was basically guesstimation on that one.
