You CAN upload pictures from your desktop, but they have to be within certain guidelines size of picture (pixels) and size of file. When you try to upload the uploader will tell you what those guidelines are. As a supporting member, those restrictions are different.

A file on your desktop has NO url in terms of how it would apply to displaying on talkbass. To use a URL you would have to have something like photobucket
 
Signed up for a Photobucket account. Uploaded some images. Tried a variety of ways to embed into forum posts. Get nothing but broken image icons. I clicked the image icon in the tool bar and pasted the URL from the selected photobucket image. No luck. What am I doing wrong?
 
Now you can use the "upload a file" button, very handy! You can still link to files already on the internet with the image button.
