Placing the pickups slant

Hello TBers,

So I've noticed that more and more basses have one or more pickups placed slant, such as the Sandberg Panther for example :

My question is : What does this kind of placement for the pickups do to the sound? Is there a wider area for the pickups to pick the sound up and make the sound fuller or something?

This arrangement gives more mids to the higher strings and more lows to the lower strings. It's the same reason that the neck pickup on a bass has more low end than the bridge pickup.

When you think about it the P-Bass has a pickup that is effectively slanted since very early on so it isn't a new idea.
