Which set of pickups would you put in the Bronco Bass ?

  • You are stupid. Burn the bass and cut your losses

  • Nobody cares, you can’t hear the bass anyway.

Join the two routes together, and set it up like a Gibson Grabber, with an even bigger area for the pickup to slide positions in.

Actually a pretty interesting idea.

Before I saw the routes you've made, I voted for the EMG thunderbird p pickups and was going to say install them reversed (G and D string coil closer to the neck). But with the routes, I'd commit to making the G&L fit.

Also welcome to the overly upgraded Bronco club, a few years ago I did this:

Schaller tuners, Fender badass-style bridge, Guild bisonic, Novak goldfoil, and Fender WRHB pickups, jaguar selector plate. Tone for days!

I looked at those, and would like to try some in the future, but they’re smaller than the routes…so I’d have to use a pretty big ring around the bridge pup, and make a new pickguard for the middle.

That said, I really want to try those, I’m guessing they sound really good and have a ton of character.
Subscribed and follow..... :hyper: :hyper: :hyper:

* prefer single pickup configuration ..... :smug:

That bass is wicked !!!

It’s kinda like a short scale version of another project of mine….

Well, I was going to mod this Bronco bass with a pair of Thunderbird pickups (PLAN A), but at the last minute I decided to put those into a Jazz Bass instead. It turned out to be a KILLER bass, so that was the right choice. Here’s a pic of how it turned out….

So that leaves me with a Bronco in need of some modding. I love these little basses, they can be made to play and sound awesome, and are amazing for fly dates and stuff. Anyway, in deciding what to do with the Bronc, I remembered that I have a pair of these old G&L pickups. “Smart me” would take some time and explore what these are worth now that G&L has shut its doors. But they are a possibility for this bass. I also have three EMG Thunderbird pickups…. To of the ones that house a precision style pickup, and one that’s the TW, can split for more versatility.

Either setup would sound great, I’m sure.

And the bass is getting a ridiculous set of upgrades … USA Hipshot lollipop tuners, hipshot string tree, bone nut, rolled fingerboard edges, an Albridge bridge, CTS pots, PIO cap, etc…. It’ll be the worlds most expensive Bronco 😂😂😂

Anyway, which set of pickups would you put in there ?

Here’s a quick mockup with the G&L pickups…

You can't go wrong with G&L MFD pu's.

BTW - the EMG and MFD are both a bit larger than the regular Thunderbird pickups, so it’s easy enough to do a little more routing and use either pickup.

I would’ve responded to this earlier but I was distracted by your badass Bronco ! It’s definitely an attention getter !

Very cool, I’ll look into that ! Thanks

EDIT: looks like the cost of ordering it would be way too prohibitive, unfortunately. I have WAY too many medical bills, so dropping $500 for a grabber pickup, plate, and template is a non-starter.

However, now I want to look into how I could do that as a DIY solution. Either that, or something like the rotating pickup setup that the Turner basses/guitars use. Maybe not for this build, but for a future one .

EDIT 2 : looks like the sliding Grabber setup is pretty simple to implement. I’m definitely going to try that on a future build.,, thanks !

I didn't see the price - I guess it would be worth it if restoring a vintage Grabber...

@Dark Horse; That's weird…I don't see a "sell Malak my MFD pickups" as an option to vote for. 🤔

 😁

Hey man… I’m not saying “yes” but I’m not saying “no” either . 😜

Heck, now that G&L is closed up, I don’t even have a clue what these are worth.

But I do know this… that little Bronco will sound awesome if I put these in it ! These MFDs are seriously incredible pickups.

:)
