scalestein - what are your light and temperature conditions, in your room? lots of natural but indirect sunlight? less natural light? no natural light? and pines are typically full-sun plants. otherwise, I would add schefflera (arboricola or otherwise) as a hearty, flexible, relatively quick growing plant that is fun to shape and prune as your heart desires, because it grows in any direction, can be trained in any direction, grows extremely well from cuttings, does well in a variety of light conditions, and recovers no matter what pruning mistakes you might make. and handles waterings like a cactus plant (is not finicky, but don't overwater consistently). cactus soil, perhaps with some additional potting soil without sand, works for scheff. (in a 50/50 mix). [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]
