Playing in bars where everyone smokes

I come home, take gear out of the van and open the windows, leave my clothes in the garage, shower, etc... Gear stays in the garage for a day or two before I bring it inside. My accessory/cable bag is emptied and I hang it up. My bass (I take it inside) takes a day or so to air out on its stand and I leave the case open. Maybe a shot of "Febreeze."
Its a hassle, but thats the nature of the business. Alot of people like to smoke and bars/clubs are one of the few places left for them to do that. Its just part of the deal and you learn to live with it. I still look forward to my gigs, smoke notwithstanding.

I occasionally smoke cigarettes (though I don't particularly care for them), and I never have any problem with being around lots of peopel who smoke. Growing up with a dad who smoked a lot actually sorta got me used to it, and after my me folks got divorced, I guess the smell of cigarettes I sort of subconciously associated with my dad (R.I.P.), so they actually smell somewhat nice secondhand. But when its between smoke and my equipment, you know which one I'm goin with. I almost took my brother's head off (literally) when he was smoking a cigarette when I had my Mesa outside 
. And I won't touch my bass I've been smoking even one ciagerette, I just get that grody feeling and it feels like some nasty tobacco stuffness will get all over my fretboard.
But anyways, I agree on the fan idea, as I ALWAYS have a fan on in my room 24/7, just can't live without it. I also think that it can be actually BENEFICIAL for both you AND your instrument to smoke some herb
before playing, because it makes playing more fun and interesting and you can be more creative, and I think basses like it. And its not a "smell", its an aroma .

ya know, back 18 years or so ago me and my pals thought we were more creative when we smoked a bit of the weed before playing. Fortunately we taped it. Hard to believe, but we sounded better straight. Who'da thunk it? 
hey now, i'm not advocating using anything, especially before playing. In fact i think it's just plain stupid. I was just relating that my pals and i found that out the hard way.........LM Bass said:
Several posts back, someone stated that after the smoking ban is in effect for a few months, business will pick back up. This is certainly not true here. Granted, the ban is in the County where I live, but nearby are other counties, states, ... and they do not have the ban. While I'm a former smoker and prefer a smoke free atmosphere, I'm not really crazy about an audience free atmosphere and the bar business has taken a big hit. Many places no longer have live bands. BTW, I'm also an avid pool player, and this is killing the pool halls too. Not only do the pool halls no longer have bands, some are gone and others are cutting back on pool tables because they're losing so much money (it's easier to make a profit off of "dinner" tables rather than pool tables, if the kitchen is decent).
