Double Bass Playing in the original key

Hi all

I am looking at versions of the Capuzzi DB concerto. One in the key of D and another in Eb - can anyone confirm the "original" key? Also, what's your view where transcriptions are made to make it easier to play a piece (as opposed to modifying a piece to play within its range) - is it the same thing or a bit of "cheating" in the nicest sense of the word?

Thanks for reading!

Buccarella did a version for Yorke Edition that I think was in A. Francis Baines did his version in F that suits orchestral tuning better because it is brighter and the fingering fits well. I don't know what the original (urtext) key is. There is a version somewhere that has orchestral accompaniment because I have heard that broadcast years ago. Is Buccarella still with us? Petracci may also know, or Tom Martin?

Happy hunting,
DP
