In 1958 Arthur Schnabel, in an interview in the Chicago Daily News said, “The notes I handle no better than many pianists. But the pauses between the notes — ah, there is where the art resides.”
IOW if you aren’t “playing the rests” you are missing much of the music.

Rests are one of the more difficult timing skills kids are out thru.
Nothing like 16th rests be the constant flub that slides you down the 2nd chair row.

Then feel those half beats as 2 and 4. That's how an old jasser taught me to use a metronome. That makes you own those downbeats.

I play in a reggae band. Rests are very important, but I never count them.
I’ve played mostly prog. Rests are important there too. But I never count either. You have to feel the notes and the spaces between them. Not count them out.
Whenever I'm resting, I *NEVER* play a wrong note!
