Double Bass Playing the tune melody on bass (or DB)

I must admit this is something that I hadn't done a lot on, except for the odd unison line. Having started to work my way through the heads of many Real Book tunes, I am beginning to see the light and think more like a horn player, as well as develop my skills further away from the money positions (half and first on DB and up to 5th fret on electric).

I regret not having done more on this, but there is always time!

How many of you practice the same, as part of your routine?

I focus specifically on the g string, study the modes of g and learn to solo up and down on the one string. the melodies practically write themselves

sorry to multipost... i'd also spend some time with double bass concertos and observe how composers write melodic solos for the g string

Whenever I receive a set list or lead sheets from a bandleader, I work out the melody. Beyond stretching my technique, it also helps me to get the sound of the melody into my head before I try to improvise on the changes, since I'm not a theory master.
