Playing upright bass with the choir.

I recently joined our praise choir and I'm looking to optimize my role. There are 16 vocalists, alto soprano, tenor and baritone voices are about equal. A piano, clarinet and two guitars and drums round it out. I come from a bluegrass, country and small group environment so I can do root/5, chord outline and some voice leading. Should I try to follow the bass vocal parts more and strive for harmony. Mostly I try not to compete with the drums for rhythm and follow the chord changes. Thanks for your reply.
