Boston Ma.
I have a 120w 4 ohm combo amp with one 12". the speaker is plugged into a external 1/4" speaker jack on the back of the amp ( even though its a combo its not hard wired) the manual says that it can be used to drive external speaker and add ons if the external speaker has an output. (Chain) I have two 15" monitors Id like to run but... they are 8 ohms.
My question is can I unhook the combo speaker and run one or two of the monitors? ( without frying something) the manual says nothing about external speaker requirements other than wattage warnings. Thank you.

Thanks. Can I use just one 8 ohm external? Another question is, can I plug in a spliter and run the combos 4 ohm with a 8 ohm external. Im sry for so many questions but trying to explore all my possabilities. Thanks.

You can run one 8 ohm external (reduced power from the amp). If the combo's speaker says 4 ohm on it and you only have one speaker out on the amp chances are runing the internal 4 ohm and an external 8 ohm will damage the amp. What combo is it maybe we can look up the specs and/or manual?

Thanks so much. So As long as I unplug the combo speaker, Im good. Thats what I took away from your advise. Thanks again. its nice to reach out with questions and get the answers so quick. Great resource.

It is Behringer ultrabass1200 120w 4ohms impedance. Its 1x12. The manual say you can stack external speakers but nothing about ohms. Just has warnings about wattage requirements. The combo speaker has to be unplugged to free external speaker jack. Thanks

Well... Im sure your amp is much better and it is suprising that you have time to comment about a strangers equipment on a forum because you must be busy with the sucessful tour and autograph signings. For me it was affordable and a means for me to play my beatiful signature geddy Lee Jazz and my new G&L L2k. When in the studio I dont use the Behringer. its in my bedroom. With the exception of you, people dont seem to rip others equipment and their contributions are helpful. If you judge equipment from others comments you might never know that the ultrabass1200 is serviceable for some peoples needs. I actually like it... you probably wont get this and are in the "show your bass" forum ripping mexican Fenders or laughing at a kids Squire.
I'll get the earplugs, you get a cork.

Wow. I took the earplug remark to mean "careful with your ears, it's gonna get loud", not a snide remark about Behringer. I rehearse though a fancy-pants out-of-production Swedish 150W "hi fi" bass combo, and even in practice, I wear earplugs. Etymotic, of course...

Okay found the manual it is not written clearly. One 8 ohm cab would be okay but only expect about 80 watts output. Two 8 ohm cabs will allow the full 120 watts. Do not use the internal speaker with any cab unless you wire them in series. The trouble with wiring in series is the impedance adds not divides so output power from the amp is reduced.

No problem. I understand why you didn't want to name the unit with gear snobs about, my only reason for asking is to get you the most accurate info I could offer :)
Let us know how it turns out, lots of folks don't have money to throw at a problem. It is rewarding to make what you have work better for you.

another thing to take away from this is knowing that if the time arises where you do use it for a different purpose, you can hook it to a different, larger cab without fear of damage, because you now know the facts about it. one 4 or two 8's.

Exactly. I am fortunate to have a couple of higher end basses but only due to a great deal. The amp powers them and for me it suits its purpose until I find a great deal on a better one... if It even comes along. Until then, we rock what we got. I played my first inexpensive bass (kramer striker) with a 30w gorilla from early 80's.. more focused on getting better as a bassist and havin fun. B.T.W. still have the Kramer and the Gorilla amp. I think its a 35b. The Behringer was quite the upgrade. Lol. I will let ya know how the ext. Hookups work out. Thanks.
