Poll: Fancy looking, plain sounding vs. Plain looking, fancy sounding

you could always take a plain-looking bass and make it look unique with a little creativity...so i vote plain-looking, fancy-sounding...assuming "fancy-sounding" means a tone aligned with your personal preference
I was just being clever. Maybe great looks/meh sound vs. meh looks/great sound would be better.

Spend your money right and you won't have to compromise. If i had to chose though, its all about the tone.
Sound first, but for heaven's sakes it's not like it's hard to have both! Playability or comfort or ergonomics or however you prefer to say it is super important, too.

I'm positively for (and it's not only poll for me it's more like my whole life commitment) plain looks/fancy sound...
I'm a straight lookin' guy (and always've been) with goodboy haircut (my father is a former elite Army parachutist officer, and I attended my call of duty an Aeroforce rifleman as well), suit n'tie and so on...
Still I listen to heavy metal music since as long as I remember Judas Priest's You've got another thing comin' (one off very first Columbia CD with, obligatory, no lyrics inside
) and play the bass along to it since Metallica's Nowhere else to Roam world tour...
I stated you guys are my heroes, for I primarily agree w/alfred with his Ibanez ATK (which, with or without mods, says it all), then I also get grendle point, for your avatar is self explaining:
really looks like one of the very best Spector finishes out there
but still granting one of the very best sounding intrument
So: I'm with you men
and my vote goes for
plain look/fancy sound

I like basses to look nice but it's more a matter of good design than fancy/non-fancy.
I find most boutique basses to be pretty vulgar-looking with their blingy tops and over-worked shapes. I think Warwick do a good job of making wood look nice without going off the deep end. Alembic on the other hand...

Of course sound must go first in your priority list. But there's no need to choose, today you can have booth. That said, I think sound is first, ergonomics is second, durability third, and looks are last.
Gotta have it all. Why would you compromise on any aspect? This is an extension and reflection of you and your artistic expression.

Come on guys, those who are saying "no compromise", "or both" are not playing fair. Get into the spirit and the nature of the discussion. The venues I play here in China, I am running through "fifty eleven" different house systems. And I dare say only I can hear the difference between the 5 basses that I have. To the crowds, it just sounds like a bass. The visual impact however, that is something that gets commented on.
