poll which pedals to start with

Hi all I am thinking of buying 2 pedals ( no multi no volume ( have 1 )
which 1s and why for middle rock ie RHCP U2 Green Day etc

As to overdrive...I still like the old rat...the bass response is not fantastic but I really like the tone I get with it.

For the sound you want a good od pedal would be great.

Compression can "improve" your sound quite a bit, but it's a subtle thing to he ears at most cases.

From the list you provided, i'd choose od and chorus for this type of stuff.

My reasoning: Get a fuzz and an overdrive. Runn them Fuzz->Overdrive. That way you can get fuzz or overdrive or (imo) a really good combo of both useing the OD to shape the fuzz a little more.

Plus, if you leave the OD on all the time you'll get some nice compression anyways

Then again, im a distortion freak. Prolly cus I used to be a guitard.....

I think you could get away with just an overdrive for most of your green days/ U2s but there is a lot of Peppers that won't sound right (IMO) without an envelope filter. And really, I always thought that Sunday, Bloody Sunday could use a little more funk.

RHCP is the only one of those that really uses effects on bass. I mean, sure go for overdrive and an envelope filter but...

I said other. Go with something that's weird and not subtle for your first pedal. My first pedal was a tremelo, and I gotta say it was the right choice for me. If you're gonna go down the dirt route, get something ballsy like a really grindy distortion or a fuzz.
