"POLY-MOJO".....LET'S SEE IT

We all know that nothing wears like Nitro, and these extremely thick, durable Polyurethane finished basses can look like a brand new bass that somebody dropped once or twice...for years!

Starting bass in the early 80's, I've played my share of "egg shell" type finishes and have an odd, possibly unhealthy appreciation for them. They don't fade the same, they chip, spider web and peel but they can still look pretty cool I think.

I'd love to see your worn Poly finished bass.

Here's my '74. I wish I had better more recent pics. These pics hide the chips pretty well. Best neck I've ever played. Covers are back in the case. It was too much of a hassle to work around them.

Very nice job!

The only thing I don't think looks 100% authentic is the wear along the full length of the bevel on the back.
It's just that I've never personally seen one worn all the way on that edge.

Other than that it looks like a really good Jaco clone (something I really would like to replicate myself).

Thanks. I've seen a few photos with that back wear all along that edge..... prolly from fat guys....
I found it was actually not that difficult working with the poly finish. Just takes some time.. no rushing it. I can see where if you were to get all rammy and rush it you could make a poly relicing job look real bad. So taking it slow is key.
Fine sandpaper to get rid of the shine and to thin the poly finish . A small chisel, sandpaper and a few other things were used for the relicing. It still needs a bit of work to finish the look. The back of the neck needs to be done, and a bit more sanding on the body. hahaha I did use an earlier photo of The Bass of Doom (before TBOD was really beat up) for a reference to get the look on the edges. Gotta get some chrome knobs yet. For my first relic job I am really happy with it.

I figured that you probably had a 'prototype' to base your relic job on. It's just that I've not seen one like that.

It takes talent and patience to do a good relic job, and I am quite sure it takes even more to do a good job on a poly finished bass.
You've accomplished that nicely.

My fretted RW Pbass was in like new condition when I bought it in the early 70's . The fretless is the bass Don Hann used to play in the old Minglewood band so much of the wear was his . ( he used to wear it pretty high back then )

I've managed to put in a couple of dings though ...

Can really see the different wear patterns between the relicced MIJ and the 70s real deals. Not meant as an offence to Schlyder, I thought it looked pretty cool by itself, then the 70s pictures came along.

This is what relic jobs can't get, see the lower bass? Chunks of msb's crotch is on that bass.
