Pop sound bad news?

Unfortunately for anyone who was coming here to flame pop music, I'm sorry to disappoint. My question is more of a technical matter. Last night I was playing on an amp I never use normally, it's actually not even mine. So I'm playing on the amp and I'm finding myself pretty low playing next to some pretty powerful guitar amps. We figure hey we've got the house to ourselves, why not crank it just a tad. So two things to note, first, I wasn't the one who turned up the volume, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't over 7. Secondly, were talking a relatively new Yorkville XM200TC Bass Combo.

So on to what actually happens. Basically I was playing some random made up bassline to test volume and as soon as I would hit the low D a pop or 'punch' would sound out of the bass. The sound is kinda hard to explain but imagine you touching a patch chord with an input while the amp is on. So I hear this sound, immediately turn the amp off and let it be. My problem now is I'm concerned whether it could be a busted cone or something else.

I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to amps, which is why I come here and ask, what you guys think it might be. I really don't think the volume was high enough to damage the amp, I mean we didn't even push it. And the settings were not altered at all considering it wasn't my amp. Any thoughts?

You're a bit inconsistent here. Did someone turn up the volume or not? Was it the owner of the amp?

It's possible you bottomed-out the cone. That may or may not damage the speaker. Depends on how hard it was and whether it happened many times.

You'll have to listen to see if the speaker is damaged.

Suppose it may be a little unclear. I don't normally play this amp but I'm sure it's never really played higher than 3 or 4. So to clarify, a guitarist buddy of mine (amp owner's son) turned it up to about 7, which is not exactly 'cranking' but considering the wattage, was much higher than usual. Hopes this helps make things clearer.

No drop D and the string was definitely not hitting any pickups. It was a clean stroke, I'm certain it was from the amp itself. It could however be a result of simply attack to hard, not necessarily hitting the pickup but just a simply aggressive attack. I've never had this problem before. I sure hope it didn't damage anything :hiding:
