Popcorn ceilings

Removing the stuff really is no big deal. I also was in the remodeling buisness for 4 years so i've worked with the stuff quite a bit. Just scrape it off, sand it down and then apply a few coats of paint. All it takes is a little elbow grease.
 
No. In southern New England you see a lot of textured ceilings with swirls.
True, a lot of house built have the swirl ceilings, but it depends when it was built. Most of the older houses like mine have popcorn or that sandy textured ceilings.


I had old plaster ceilings with the popcorn finish that wasn't in the best shape. I had someone go over it with new Sheetrock and then a smooth veneer plaster. Looks great now.

I suppose if your up to the task you could do the same and skip the plaster and just prime and paint. It would give you the best results for a smooth flat ceiling.
