possable £5 project.

ok on one of my rare trips outside in to the typical scottish weather (rain) i was walking by a thrift shop and found a nice wee find. a set of old 70's wharfedale speakers for £5 so i figured "what have i got too loose" and after some strange looks on the bus ride home from teenage mothers (i was in the pram section with them) got em home to get a good look at what i brought

rather attractive dont you think?
my intention is to turn them into bass cabs so i started to dismantle. the grill has a cool little ball joint so it comes off and goes on easy to show

thought to myself "theres no mention of impedence on the cab so mabey on the speaker

no mention of impedence on the speaker but it seems to be in good condition so if i can find the impedence ill see what i can do.

any thoughts?

ok so doing a little more reserch they look like the linton speakers wich are apparently 6ohms and can take 25 watts. that doesnt phase me because i was planning on using them with my epiphone valve jr. however im not too sure if the whole 6ohm thing will be a problem and im not too sure if its 6ohms per cab or together. however it does say "nominal impedence"

the drivers are 8" btw. perfect for my little boxy valve jr

Let me qualify my statements below by saying I am one of very few members on TalkBass that advocates experimentation with speakers. I say, if you’ve got them, or can get them at an affordable price, put any speaker you want in any cabinet you want. The worst that can happen is that they won’t sound good, then you can try something else or do the science and figure out why.

Having said that, I don’t think you’ll have a lot of luck converting the Warfdales to bass cabinets. Speakers designed for reproducing compressed, full range music in a home stereo setting generally don’t work well for reproducing live, relatively uncompressed instruments. You could probably get away with using them for VERY low volume practice at home, but if you put any power at all through them or do something dynamic like plucking the strings hard or slap bass they will basically self destruct. They are not the tool for the job of reporducing bass guitar.

They should make very nice stereo speakers. That’s what I’d use them for. And at £5, you got a good deal.

I don't think I'd tear 'em up for that project.

Wharfdales were pretty well respected back in the day, and might possibly be worth some real money to a vintage hi-fi collector.

Those woofers will probably blow putting electric bass into them.
But, they're yours, so do what you want....;)

thanks for your input. most aprecated. i plan to use them with my epiphone valve jr. wich isnt powerfull and considering atm im using it with a old p.a cab im looking to give it a try.

so what your saying is keep it as a nice wee stereo speakers or change the speakers in it?

I'd say, if you have some other good hi-fi components, hook 'em up to the Wharfdales and see how they sound for their intended purpose. Forget using them for BG. the woofer in your Valve Jr is probably stouter than those.

Otherwise, do some online research to see what kind of money you might could get if you sell them.

already done so. bout the best you can get in the uk for em is £10

hence why i thought see if i could find a use for them as somthing else. plus the best thing is if i mess this up badly then theres another set in the same shop for £5.
