Possible flight case option: Pelican V800

Love this, definitely going to be looking to grab one of these on my next trip to the states.
Currently using the Bass Safe having moved away from a Kapsule (I had the guitar one for shortscale basses and then stopped playing shortscale
)
Where the bass safe wins over the Kapsule is that ability to go around town with a light gigbag, it loses out on almost every other point.
This is a nice solution where I might be able to fit a small pedalboard in there, certainly some clothes whereas with the bass safe I’m struggling to get more than a cable in there.

It arrived and due to the body/neck angle my Rickenbacker 4003 didn’t fit in it.
So I panic bought a Mono Vertigo and today went to the closest sporting goods store and grabbed the V800.
It’s a bit tight around the boot, but nice and secure and a bit of space to pack a few things around it. Potentially I could even get a tick in there and clip it on when I unpack at my destination.
Flying Houston - Doha - Istanbul the next couple of days so I’ll let you all know how it holds up.

I have two of the I-series cases. Flown with them many times. They hold up extremely well.
I’m mid travel so no idea if this is holding up well yet. But was charged an oversized fee for it.
This matters less and less as generally I’m paying for a musical instrument to be checked normally, at which point size and weight don’t seem to matter.
Anyway this is worth knowing if you’re planning on flying with one. For Qatar Airlines it was definitely oversized.

So in summary now all travel is done.
I prefer this to the bass safe but I’d prefer the Kapsule to this.

Thought I'd post a link to my reply in another thread asking about case fit in the Pelican V800
I just flew with it and it worked out pretty well, but for anyone on the fence, I made a few comments how the SKB is WAY easier to roll around. The wheel placement of the Pelican kind of sucks for dragging long distances, and it won't stand on end the way the SKB will. I cut the foam to fit my Contego case, and other than the annoyances of dragging it and there only being two acceptable resting positions for the Pelican Vault (on the long hinge edge or laying flat, unless you count leaning against a wall, but make sure it's leaning on the top, or the wheels will make it slip easily). I wish there were a better option still for checking a bass without a ridiculous checked bag fee, and which allows me to nest a soft case so I don't have to drag the hard case everywhere at my destination).
Other positives- easy to open and close (unlike the skb with that awful fixed buckle), easy for TSA to close it back up properly (unlike the SKB), only had to pay $35 each way for it on Delta (their site says it should be 70 given the total length, but who am I to argue?), and my bass made it to the destination and back without issue.
In the negatives column, I flew into SFO and took Bart. Someone apparently wined to Bart secuirty about it looking like a rifle case- which, while technically true, there's nothing on it saying it's a rifle case, and was just kind of annoying. The Bart cop who approached me said he used to work as a photographer and used rifle cases to transport his stands, and often got weird looks. He said as long as it was locked properly (it was), he didn't care what was in it. Good to know.
Speaking of things that go bang, does anyone here pack (and declare) a starter pistol in their case? I hear that's a thing. Apparently there's far greater scruitiny and better tracking of firearms in checked baggage, so it's far less likely your instrument will end up in the belly of the wrong plane.

Padded gig bag in the Pelican case is a fantastic idea! Props to @AcridSaint for the original write up.
I had not heard this was a thing. But that's an intriguing idea... Once again, the TalkBass community delivers.
Pretty much anything longer than a standard suitcase (26-31 inches in length) will be considered oversized. I usually fly British Airways and American. Have not ever been charged extra for my I-series cases.
