Post counts are gone?

Maybe it's something in my settings, or something with the new upgrades, but I don't seem to be seeing post counts anymore...

This was mentioned in a thread in this very sub-forum by Paul - in 'Suggestion Box'!

The idea is apparently to stop threads aiming to rack up posts - I have noticed a "rash" of these, amongst the more "juvenile" members - boasting about racking up 1,000 posts in a month, having the mosts posts in a thread etc. etc.

I think this is a step in the right direction, but it would make more sense to have a definite policy statement - along the lines of : threads aimed solely at increasing post counts will be deleted!

I'm sure the more sensible members would be happy to send reports to mods, where this happens - I know I would!

I understand the possible problems with some individuals simply trying to ramp up their number of posts and I don't think that it's in any way a good thing. That said, I've always found the post count to be a handy way to gauge a poster's involvement with TB. I would back the above post (if I understand it correctly) that post counts should be brought back but that shameless 'post booster' should be clamped down on.

Here is a reply I posted on the same subject, but in a different thread....same answer!

+100 on that! I find that I viewed the post counter as kind of a "feedback lite".....i.e. not based on transactions, but based on participation. I enjoy seeing the post counter, as it will help one identify active participants on the forum, and perhaps adds a bit of validity.

I agree that there have been obvious attempts by some to invent threads for the sole purpose of increasing the post count.........so delete them! Make this sort of blantant abuse against the rules of the forum, and enforce diligently. I do not believe it is correct to "penalize" the vast majority of the membership of TalkBass who post responsibly and contribute actively to the forum, due to the ridiculous behavior of a small percentage of the membership. In most of society, we attempt to set rules and standards that if not met, result in the punishment or penalization of the offenders, not those who obey the law. Why should TalkBass be any different? We have a wonderfully diverse community of individuals brought together by a common interest, and we should all be able to enjoy one another's contributions, while being bound by the rules of acceptable behavior.

Post count can come in handy. Someone comes in asking all kinds of silly newbie-type questions, sporting a post count of two, ya might cut the poor cat some slack.

Someone with a post count of 1000 that needs to be reminded about the search feature may get less consideration.
