Post Genz-Benz: Amp lineup?

I don't use a rig much, but I am thinking that my current rig (Genz Benz Shuttle 3.0-10T and 110 extension cab stack) while sounding good enough and loud enough, seems like I'm not doing my bass (Roscoe Century Standard 5 Plus) justice - even if it's just for home use and occasional small gig, jazz background music gigs.

I have liked the light weight/portability of Genz, and the sound. But now that I'm not doing load ins/outs as much, or as late at night, maybe it's time to go for sound and not worry about portability as much. For the few times a year that I move it, maybe weight isn't as big a deal.

Is it time to give up the Class D and look at something a little more "substantial" intend? Not saying I'll go as far as a $2,000+ DB751 but there must be a compromise somewhere.

Sorry for the tangent. This should have gone in my "What are you using" thread.

Let me get this straight. You are using two small 110 cabs and one if the lowest wattage micros in the market. And you are attributing the lack of big sound to the power amp topology of the head?

Well, in my defense, I guess I meant that if I were to get rid of the smaller cabs, seeing as one is attached to the head, I would look at a new head as well.

Looking for a serious answer? That Monique with the Demeter Class D power amp intrigues me, as does the TecAmp stuff. I haven't heard any of it, but I'd like to do so.

Cabwise, Bergantino has a lot of good choices. A pair of HD-112's would be my answer, but I'm sure others would say 212 and/or CN over the HD.

I'm totally used to it and would be disappointed with any less of a response. :bassist:

I have been looking at the Monique And TechAmp as well. Something I could use as a pre/DI at church with my IEM's and add the amp/cab for home practice and pick up gigs. It is EXPENSIVE STUFF though. I hate having such good taste.

I have had and liked a Bergantino HD112.

That's an amazing little box. Cameron plays one of those with an HD-112 underneath it. Wow is all I can say.

You do need something in front of it to take full advantage of it, but that's no biggie. Heck, build a little pedal board around some pedal-format preamp.

The Berg 212 cabs......For someone like me, who is used to the sound of multiple non-neo 10's, and likes deep, clear, not-boomy lows, crystal clear highs, and mids that aren't "honky", would either of the the Berg offerings work for me? Or should I stick with 10's, and maybe look into a Berg 410?

The HD-212 would NOT be what you're after, but the CN-212 might be. My honest recommendation, though, would be a pair of the HD-112 cabs. For some reason, a pair of those ceramic 112 cabs sounds tighter to my ears than the bigger 212 cabs (which can get a little loose on you, especially the HD-212).

Now if loose is your thing (and it is for lots of guys), the HD-212 is the one...

I suspect the CN-212 falls somewhere in between, but I've not spent enough time with that cab to be able to speak with much authority about it. Soon. Soon. Once our showroom is done, I'm gonna break out all these cabs that I've had just sitting in boxes in the back. I can't wait!!

Just finished a sound check with the Roscoe, CN212 and Aguilar Th500. Been using the Glock, but man this rig is made for a Roscoe. Just a smidge of cut at 500hz combined with slight bass and treble boost. Amazing clarity and warmth.

I would highly recommend considering a CN112 and a Th350. You posted that volume wasn't the issue, but warmth and fatness is. That would actually be less for you to carry, and would be a bit louder and a Lot fatter.

IP is amazing if you don't mind the weight. Very open and hi fi. And a bit fussy with preamp matching.

Oddly enough that is my current setup - Monique dove cage with Minnie power amp is my main rig, TecAmp Puma 900 is my backup amp. Never been happier with my tone. Monique is just flat-out magic to my ear (ymmv). The Puma is a bit less gorgeous, but the eq points are perfectly set and the taste knob is a quick "change my tone now" control.

I still go back and forth on throwing some Bergs underneath them again at some point.

I have a bunch of live recordings of the Monique setup if you want to hear it in that setting. No warranty implied or expressed on the quality of the playing :D
