Here's my 1999 BSR-J4. I really like it. The wood combo is avidoire and walnut with a bubinga board. It's a really live sounding bass and the preamp is super flexible and useful. Definitely the best neck I've had the pleasure of, too. I think the Smith 4 necks are the shiznitz!

MMUUUAAA---HHHAAAA---HHHAAAA!!!! (exorcist voice on) THE BASS IS MINE! (exorcist voice off)
I just got that bass from Will...it's a KILLER player, and sounds PHENOMINAL!!! The wood combo, while is different than your typical "dark woods on the wings and light woods in the middle" look, still looks great. and the avidore has a little bit of figure to it, especially in the right light. Avidore sounds GREAT as a tonewood....a little like mahogany, a little like alder...
I listed it on Bassgear too spark some interest there, as I have my eye on a LowEnd Jazz or Nordstrand Jazz in sonic blue; if it doesn't sell, I'll sleep just fine at night knowing I still own it!! I might just keep it and buy a LowEnd or Nord J anyway!

Let us know more about the DIP switches when you get back.

well, right now i can tell you for the bass and treble controls they apparently give you different frequency points for cut/boost,
there are two switches per pot...four options each.
the mid is a bit different as it gives you a couple of frequency points and a bandwidth option as well....
but i can't seem to find any specific info on what these exact frequency points are, or how wide the bell option is on the mid, it's not included with the paperwork and i can't seem to find it on the website....
my quick guess on the freq is:
bass:40, 60, 80, 100hz?
treble: 2k, 4k, 6k, 8k?
mid: 200, 400, 800?(with a wider bell at 250)?
only had a chance to roll through the options once,
i'll listen up next week when i'm back on it.
my quick-adjustment reaction had me keeping the bass at the lowest point (super thunder!) the mids on the 800-ish tight band (a more pronounced "voice" for chords/runs)and the treble on the third highest freq. i like to be able to nudge the bass or mids and clean it up with a slight treble cut. i would imagine for recording i might choose a higher bass freq. to make it sit in a radio mix a bit better. i can get massive sub-dub to total burp with slight adjustments, it's brilliant!
the pan between pickups alone is very q-like.
easily the best sounding onboard pre i've ever had!
Ken, if you're around, would you care to enlighten us with the exact spec?
cheers

Thanks for the invite. I think the Treble is close to your estimate. The Bass is a shelf filter and the highest widest shelf is at about 200hz. The mids are the toughest to choose. The Boost and Cut do opposite things. The pre-set setting we ship them at has the tightest cut and the sweetest boost. I must have gone through about 8 settings for each Band before choosing the 4 that you have now in your Bass. By the end of the Test day my ears were shot! For my taste I prefer the 'shipped' settings or the previous default settings. Others have different tastes thus the other options and combinations to mix. I don't remember the #s of each setting nor do I wish to. It is more important to use your Ears in this case. Have fun......

btw, Ken,

ever think about making an EUB, or better yet an acoustically resonant, yet smaller upright?

This topic has been discussed to death here on TB and elsewhere. There are no shortcuts to making a good sounding Double Bass. After 400 years, it has been determined that there is no substitute to a real Double Bass, NONE!

Plug in anything you like. String up your kitchen table for all I care. But when the lights go out and the Amps don't work, the only Bass you will hear are the ones in and similar to my collection.

Examples here of real Double Basses;[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

awesome info...
thanks Ken!!!
i just wanted to also add another .02 that one of the best features about this onboard pre is that although it's 18volts it has a very rasonable amount of output (not overly hot like my other 18v pres) so it can easily be used at normal gain settings without overdriving fx and outboard
gear.

Good info. I've tried the new Smiths in-store and found the active mid very nice, but a little hyped. Boosted treble is in dog whistle territory. Next time I go there I'll be sure to ask they can open it up and try some different DIP settings.
