I know it's a type of fuzz, but I'm not even sure it's a bass fuzz, but if it is, what would I need to cop that tone?

It changes from fuzz to overdriven bass about ~0:35 in, so it seems.

The more I listen, the more I doubt it's a bass fuzz, but I don't trust my own hearing that much.

Any ideas?

That was the fabulous Reggie McBride on the bass. Love that song...have no idea what he did, but if I were trying to recreate that sound, I'd take a Precision, a clean DI, an old SVT cranked pretty loud, and a Fuzz Face set on medium fuzz, and blend to taste. Funny enough, I was just playing with my Zoom B2, and I got a similar sound using its Fuzz Face setting.
