:::beer::: I lived in Allston for way too many years. Or, some might argue, just the right number of years.
That 1984 tape that I posted in post #4 was recorded at Baker Street Studios in Watertown MA ...but their second Watertown location. I also recently found someone had uploaded a single I recorded in 1980 to youtube; that one was mixed at Baker Street's first Watertown location. But it is hideously sucky, so I have no intention of sharing it here.
So was 1/2 track on 1" tape, for a while, anyway, not sure if that is still a thing. Lots of guys were modding ATR-100 machines for that years ago (a studio I worked at in the early '80s had a 4-channel ATR-100; I did lots of razor blade editing on it. Those recorders were the best. The guy I worked with there, who has been a great friend ever since, has that machine, these days.
One of the seven drummers we went through in the 11 years I was with Rare Blend played with Poco. This recording is a RB song with George that we performed at a drum fest he produced. I used the 4005WB for this show, there were Chromes on it at that time. Not the greatest audio quality, it was a PA board feed to an MD recorder.

That recording is eight minutes long so I expect the built-in TB player to not be up to the task (download the file).
I found this. It is a jam from when we were auditioning a drummer to be in Rare Blend. We were set up in a large video studio, kind of like a small auditorium with a proscenium stage but we all set up in the house area as there was no seating on the floor.

I never learned to do the razor blade editing thing - heard a lot about it in the works of Frank Zappa & Lowell George, and I did work at a tape-duplicating place in Allston (named, predictably, Allston Cassette), but I think my hands are too sweaty, I don't think I'd have been able to do it.
Weird how TB won't play the whole track. The bass sounds cool, I would never have guessed 4005!
There's no Massachusetts/New England connection to these recordings is there? I almost thought I had put Mass. in the thread title or something...
BTW We've had a power outage here since Sunday night - still out at home, I'm at the office charging my devices, that's why I'm able to post.

That bass was pretty versatile sounding, depending on what strings I used and, of course, playing technique.
Hope you get your power back, soon. We have had a fair amount of outages over the years, most fairly short, but we did have one that lasted almost a week, many years ago.
Then of course, there was that one where the whole NE of the US lost power due someone not paying attention, IIRC.

I have a few exciting things to post:
1. The power is back on! 44 hours later, we got power back at around 5 pm yesterday. And I was just getting used to life with limited internet access...
2. Someone posted one of our old shows on YouTube, I think it's basically the same lineup from the tape except a different drummer (we went through a lot)
3. When I posted it on Facebook, I lamented that there was so little video of the band from that era. Someone piped up that they had a VHS tape - I think it's the MIT show - he found it and will be sending it to me! Now I have to figure out how to transfer the VHS tape to some digital format. Unfortunately, it's the show with ZERO low end! Oh well, I'll still enjoy checking it out.

I used to switch between pick for the verses and slap for the chorus. I played along with it last night, maybe the first time in close to 20 years? I played a few shows with the band in 2002 when they were paying back the manager so probably played it then.

From 2001, a track from an album I played bass on. The Tony Island live band was a blast to play with.

Actually, the keyboardist was TOTALLY into Brian Auger! But I don't think the rest of us had more than a passing familiarity, though I have come to really get into some of his stuff the past year or two.
I got into the Oblivion Express in 1973 when WMMS really pushed that album, making Brian into the household name that he is (uh-huh!
). I learned that album as part of my early bass training. In fact, the DJ who was instrumental in making that happen was a guy named Billy Bass (as in the fish). I got to know him in the '00s when I began making prints for him at the photo lab I ran back then.I've seen Brian a lot of times, mostly in the past 20 years, or so (only once though, back in the day).

And from early 1988, a band in L.A. I played guitar in, Insect Affect (I'm the one in the green sportcoat with the white Ibanez strat). Recorded at our last ever gig at the long defunct Anti-Club
It doesn't seem like this was 20 years ago. I was the original bassist with these guys. I told people our music was the same way I like my women: loud, slow and heavy.
