I have a Bergantino IP310, so that's 1000 watts.

It's really loud. I mean really, really loud, particularly for its size.

I can't imagine needing anything louder, unless I played a big outdoor show with no PA support. Even then it would probably be fine.

Watts are important, but other things (speaker efficiency, etc.) play a role.
 
Right now I'm running a GK Backline 600 as a preamp into a Crown Micro-Tech 1200 in stereo into 2 GK 2x12 Neo cabs, 310W each, so 620W total. I really want to simplify my setup, sell/trade the Crown and possibly the BL600 and get a 1001RB-II. Save about 40 lbs. and 2 rack spaces.
 
My gig rig is a Carvin BX1200 into a Carvin BRX 410 neodymium cabinet. The amp puts out 1200 watts bridged into a 4 ohm load, which is exactly what the cab is rated for, so they are perfectly matched.

I play with loud rock and R&B guys (yes, R&B...try keeping up with a Hammond B3 and 2 Leslie speaker cabs!) and this rig will fill any room I put it in with headroom to spare, with no PA support.

I've only had the cab for a couple of months (was using an 810 before) but so far it seems to be an ideal balance of power, size, tone, and weight.

my understanding is, you actually want to double your wattage... amp = cabs rating x2
 
Usually use my Ampeg V4BH-100 ALL TUBE watts
then when needed I use my Fender 300PRO-300w all tube & often use my Mark bass LMII for use with my Elec. uprite bass! which is 300w @ 8 ohm & 500w @ 4 ohm.
I find the 100w V4BH is ALL that is needed(into a BERGANTINO NV610) for most gigs & we have a LOUD drummer too! So it's a LOT louder than a S.S. 100w IME.
 
Two rigs:

A peavey (yes Peavey) dpc 1400x puts about 1200 watts into an Epifani Ul310 at 5.3 ohms. Rock, loud venues, out doors. 14lbs light. One rack space. Amazing, amazing amplifier.

A walter woods Ultra Power head puts out 700 watts into an 8ohm begantino Ht112 for upright, jazz gigs, rehearsals etc. It weighs a mere 6lbs and is the size of a cigar box. Amazing, amazing amp.

The amps are actually rated very similar in tems of RMS output.
The Peavey delivers 1400 watts (bridged) into 4ohms and the Walter Woods is rated at 1200 watts into 4 ohms. For what they are they each are fantastic in terms of size weight and portability.

This means that they should be very near to eachother in volume when A/Bed through the same speaker and I assure you that they are not. Guess which one is louder.

Everybody is right to say that impedance, tube vs. solid state and speaker system efficiency are big factors but there is a lot more, even when comparing two solid state power amps. So much so that I would hesitate to compare things in terms of watts anymore- especially RMS values. Peak output, continuous output and how quickly the amp 'recovers' are engineering terms that I barely understand but I believe to acount for some of these differences.
When evaluating amps, just trust your ears, period.
