Every major amp manufacturer wires the output so that you can't run the amp without a load even if it's not connected to a speaker. I think the exception would be a fender champ Or the tweed bassman that don't use a 1/4 speaker connector.

You're saying it's okay to run the amp with no speaker connected? Because that's what it sounds like you are saying but maybe I'm just misinterpreting.

It sounds like ran the amp without your permission and ran it without a load. I'd unplug his heart from his torso and see if he's able to maintain any output.

Make sure to send him the repair bill, and his own hospital bill. I'd be very worried about the output transformers.

Second the concern about the OT. Make sure it's good.

Yes , that's exactly what I'm saying. Amps have a failsafe for this in the form of a shorting jack. Unless this particular example doesn't have one, which would Definitely be a big surprise tbh.

Shorted output is just a less bad scenario than open. Isn't OK like a correct load. Its just less disastrously wrong.

Judging from the number of old tube amps I've worked on, I wouldn't trust the shorting feature of the jack.

Amps have a failsafe for this in the form of a shorting jack.

A shorting jack can help e.g. when a stagehand pulls the cab' s plug (just) before turning the amp off.

Tubes prefer a short cut zero Ohm load to a non load.

But the transformer will hate that short cut!

Grilling your transformer is not a good idea either!

That' s why some major amp manufacturers don' t use the shortcut.


Don' t run a tube amp without a load! (read the manual!!!!)
