Power amp in pedal form

With so many cool pedals that are great preamps as well, wouldn't it be handy to have a power amplifier that was small enough to fit on a pedal board? I have a VTDI, Paradriver and a B3 and wish i could just add a power amp to the pedal board and have a complete package. Just thinking out loud

EHX 44 Magnum. Not going to be loud enough unless you put two or three to efficient dedicated cabs, but it does exist.

The problem is now you have to run speaker wire 20 feet to your rear.

I guess thats the problem for bass, needs at least 200 watts or more. 500-800 would be ideal.

Strap a GK MB200 to your board.

I don't see why people would want to do this. Then you'd have to run a speaker cable from the board to the amp.

The reason is to eliminate the amp head or rack mount power-amp. Your effects, preamp and power amp all on your pedal board.

I don't quite see the benefit ... takes up space on the board, stoop down to change settings, risk of bad accidents if a volume knob is bumped by a foot or cable. And with today's powerful micro amps the size and weight saving is minimal. Nah, I think the amp has a better place on top of the speaker cabs.

They make powered cabinets so that's always an option.

Th GK MBP powered cabs cannot be used directly from a pedal board. They are only an expansion cab for use with the appropriate GK combo amp.

Powered bass cabs are quite rare, but an excellent idea that i wish more manufacturers would explore.

PA guys have been using powered speakers for years. Just look for a plate amp. You will now have to run A/C to your cab as a result.

I run a QSC K12 with my VT Bass deluxe equipped Pedal Board. Works a treat for a lot of my gigs!

I, for one, am all for it!


Not mentioned yet is SWR's Amplite, which of course you'll need to find on the used market but caveat emptor, the SWR things may not be reliable (I've heard some people complain about them).

I have an Amplite.

Not much to complain about other than what it cost.

I kinda wish the fan was a bit quieter, but i'm just used to my stewart power amp which was convection cooled and dead silent. Small price to pay for the compactness and light weight.

Hard to find these days, but not impossible.

You won't get that kind of power in a pedal (200-500w) but there are a number of pretty compact micros that you could easily attach to a board - off the top of my head, SWR made a really small class D amp a couple of years ago in a number of power ratings - I can't imagine they've stopped in today's climate - there are a good number of other compact power amps that could easily mount to a large board. It doesn't NEED to be pedal per se since I would hope you're not going to stomp on it - it just needs to be small/light enough to mount on the board.
