Powered Cabinet

Hi every one,

I'm looking to buy or build a powered cabinet. I use a Bass Pod XT Live most of the time so i don't need a preamp. I've seen the Bergantino IP112ER but it's too pricey for me. Is there something similar around 800/1000$?
My other solution is to make own my self. So if any owne of you know a power amplifier kit or can point me a schematic for 200/300 watts, please let me know.

Part of the draw of the "powered cabinet" concept for me was that I wouldn't have to worry about matching a power amp to a cabinet and all that entails. I just need two cables (and cheap ones at that), my preamp du jour, my bass, and the cabinet. Heck, I've even used the internal preamp on the Carvin by itself and that sounds good to me, too. Plus, because of the dedicated midrange driver, I've used this cab for lead guitar as well using a simple multiFX device and the sounds there are great, too.
 
Four cables: 1. Bass to preamp. 2. Preamp power. 3. Preamp to powered cab. 4. Amp power.

The only difference from a conventional head/cab system is that cable #3 is a line-level cable instead of a speaker cable.

Disadvantages of a powered cab:

- A powered cab weighs more, and will be larger, than a conventional cabinet.

- With a separate head, you can have someone carry that while you carry other stuff.

- If a separate head fails, you can grab a replacement in a hurry. With a powered cab, you probably send the whole thing to a shop. Now you need head/cab to gig while it's being fixed.

- There are cases when you can bring just an amp head and use the venue's backline cabinet.

- If you later decide you just love a new amp head, you can switch it without dumping the powered cab.
 
If it's going into the speaker cabinet, you have to worry about vibration and cooling.
Class-d is a good way to go. They still need cooling they don't need but of fraction of what a class-ab needs. It's much easier to blow it with a class-ab.

If want a lightweight SMPS power supply - that's hard to come by.
Some modules like the B&O IcePower modules they will not sell to users, only companies.
