Practice gear setup

wasnt sure where to post this so please move if there is a better place for it:

I live in a city in an old cottage. There is a flat underneath us and neighbours share our walls on each side. I also have 2 small kids so most of my practice is done after they're in bed.
I keep one bass on a stand in the living room and play it unplugged or through a Invalid Link Removed .
The other I play through an Invalid Link Removed with AKG headphones. Neither is really satisfying. Any suggestions? What setup do you guys have? I don't have a dedicated music room, I have to share the kids playroom.

Get a setup that uses headphones. There are tons of threads on TB about that. Then you don't bother anyone.

I do, I have AKG 50s and Senheiser HD 201s each gives a very different tone. Any recommendations for bass headphones?

Vox and or headphones are all I know of. Now as to tone I leave to the other guys. My ears are 83 years old and made of tin.

I just threw down $100 for some Sennheiser HD280PRO Headphones
(after searching the recording forums)
They work quite well with my Cafe Walter H1-A1 headphone amp.

Same boat as you I have to play when my kids go to bed. I only use my headphones to I have the hd 280 pros also. But is is not even close to the sound when I can play Thu my amp.

Sometimes you just need to feel the air move too. I'm thinking of hiring a practice room once a month. There's one nearby that's pretty cheap and maybe I can get some people together for a jam. I'm not in a band or anything yet but I'm looking to get something together soon.

If you're also a guitar player I would recommend a Yamaha THR10. I've been using one for about year with great results. There's a headphone jack as well as a secondary input if you want to play along with songs. The guitar tones are fantastic, there is a dedicated bass setting (also acoustic!).

I run through my pedal board and use a DI out to a Mackie Mix5. There are other mixers like this and maybe even smaller ones available, but it works well to control volumes and is easy to hook my phone/tablet through a 1/8" stereo to split 1/4" cable. Works really well for practicing quietly. I still get looks from the fam if I'm slapping or playing heavily (all this is normally on the coffee table in our living room).

I have some old Sony MDR-7506 headphones that I use most of the time, or my IEMs if I want to get them out. The headphones aren't the greatest but they are sturdy and reliable.
