Pre-amp into Combo amp?

Guitar player since 59 and played some bass in studio tracks........but.....new to bass gear and possibilities.
Got a GK210 combo and i like it...33lbs....but would like a more ampeg sound and have a chance to get an SVP-CL.

Can i plug bass into SVP and SVP into the GK and if so should i use the passive or active input on GK?

Can i plug bass>SVP>MIXING BOARD for recording?

thanks in advance for any help...... i would just get a SVT and big box to plug it into but cant handle the weight anymore.

Dingoblues, i considered those also.......but the svp is exactly the replica of the pre amp for the svt classic..........with 4 preamp tubes......so i thought it would be DEEP into Ampeg territory.
Still, i am not familiar with preamps.......is it safe to route bass>svpcl>gk?

Just use the SVTPre into the effects return of your amp. (If it has one.) This will bypass the internal preamp and just substitute the Ampeg into the power amp. I run a SABDDI into the effects return of a Crate combo and it makes a faux Ampeg out of it.

i have the gk mb210 combo which doesnt have effects send or return..........not a bad sound and its very light........i was also considering a ampeg pf500 head with a ampeg pf cab which is also light and is supposed to have a
good ampeg sound.......decisions, decisions....lol

Yup, you don't have an effect loop. I don't know how to bypass the preamp in your combo.
It is not a good idea to use the SVP-CL into the intrument input on your combo, like Tractorr said.

The SVP-CL is a very nice preamp. I prefer the SVP-pro myself but that is a matter of taste. If you can get a good deal on it it might be worth... if in the future you get another amp or go the preamp route.

A lot of people are trying to find an "ampeg" sound. And there are various products that try to achieve that. With varying results for everyone.

A VT Bass would be your best bet. Maybe you can find one used.

And yes you can use it as direct input for recording.

The VT can do more than just an Ampeg sound so it's a pretty good purchase in the long run. I use it into a GK 1001RB head (a very modern head) as well as record direct to the board with it. I can easily find the Ampeg sound I'm used to from my old rig, but I usually find something better for the situation.

Also, I have a Line 6 Bass POD, the original "simple" one. (bean shape)
I just love it. I found it very cheap on the used market.
The B-15 and Marshall Superbass modelling I found very great. Oh, and sub dub model.
The SVT modelling... is close enough. Although I am not an SVT user or afficionado so I might not really care if that is good SVT modeling.

Something you might look into, or even pick up if you find one dirt cheap. Also fun to use as headphone amp.

I would then, if the Ampeg sound is a must-have, sell the GK and get an Ampeg PF500.
