Precision and Tele bass wiring comparison

I have a Squier Telecaster bass (wide area Humbucker) that I have modified to have a regular split P type pickup. The Squier is passive with V/T controls, and the Humbucker is wired to have just 2 wire output. 2 wires are jumpered together.

This is how I think the Squier is wired based on the photos I took:

I looked at several standard P bass wiring diagrams and think they are normally wired this way:

I wired the split P just like the Humbucker was originally wired and thought it sounded a little different, so I started looking into these details.

I know the pickup doesn't behave like an ideal source, but if you think of it that simplified way, the Tele circuit divides down the signal and then conditions only the divide part with the Tone RC. The standard design conditions the signal directly from the pickup with the RC (the full signal) and then passes a divided down portion of that to the output.

Anyone know why Squier would use this circuit? The Tele bass is very "dark" - does this have something do with it? I haven't checked the C or R values (pots) so that may affect the sound. I'm thinking of switch it back over to the "standard" wiring for comparison but it's a bit of a hassle to disassemble.
