Precision Bass Identification

Hey,

I recently got a loaded Precision body at a swap meet, and I was hoping that I could get some help identifying exactly what the slab of wood on my work table is. As this is a project, my main objective is to find out if it's worth keeping the pickups and pots.

From my research, the routing style on the body appears to make it either a late 90s Fender or a Squier. The guy who sold it to me said it was a Fender, not that that's really surprising , however; the fact that it has a three ply guard and a Switchcraft jack makes me inclined to believe him.

Will include pictures below, but viewer discretion is advised. It's a very ugly bass .

Seem more like a Squier, based on the color and the plastic knobs. One thing that seems odd is the flat head type set screws in the bridge. I thought by the 90s, all the set screws were the Allen key type. If it were a MIM Fender, it would have a router hole under the pickguard.

Looks to be a Fender black label Precision body. Essentially mid/late 90’s MIM. If it were a Squier Series body from the same era, the pickguard would be one ply white.
I recently snagged a (complete) bass like yours from the classifieds myself.

I thought that it might be a MIM, but it doesn’t have the typical router hole under the pickguard that I’ve seen on every MIM. Here is a photo of a black label body that was sold on TB:

It’s possible it could be a Squier II like this one. That would explain the older type set screws in the bridge.

I should have specified, the color in the pictures is a very nasty refinish i'm in the process of removing. The original color appears to have been a dark blue, based off of what I can see in the neck pocket and cavity.

BassFishingInAmerica, I was intrigued by the flathead set screws as well. I've taken some closer, and hopefully better pictures of the bridge and a few other places. fingers crossed that will help. I'd be inclined to agree with your assessment of a Squier II, except that the hole for the strap button on mine is on the very end of the horn, and the bridge is mounted with five screws instead of seven on the example you gave.

cataract, If it turned out to be a black label like yours, that would be sweet, as yours looks like a beauty!
