Preffered strings?

My music teacher brought in her dads 'spare' bass. there is a bit of a story to it (of which i did not have time to listen to) but it was a fairly new fender jazz bass, (although there was no actual fender sticker, and im sure this isnt brand new out of the factory, but it hadnt been played much) I asked what sort of strings they were, they looked like flat wounds to me, but i was told they were the strings that were on it originally. they sounded great, especially on such a great instrument (it restored my faith in the jazz bass). could anyone help me identify them? they had a red teathery bit on the end that goes into the tuning peg.

yea, i know, sorry, i dont have any information, i know that it wasnt an expensive one, i reakon it was no more than 1-2 years old, but it had the silver pickup guards. i think it might have been a re-issue? the strings certainly were new, i think the man never played it. there was nothing on the bass that illuded to age or anything of that nature, it didnt even have the fender sticker on it.
