Preparing for camp

Hey guys. I got an awesome scholarship this year and I am dedicating it to a week long jazz camp. I've only ever played in front of an audience in very informal situations, and my bass theory (mostly self taught) will be tested. I've been taking lessons for almost 2 years, but I'm not sure my knowledge is up to snuff. Needless to say I'm a little intimidated.

For a bassist at a beginner or intermediate level, what skills and techniques should I brush up on?

Bring a flute.

Know all the scales. Major and minor and modes too if you have time. Know what chords can be made of the notes in those scales. Memorize the chord progressions to some standard tune. Buy a Real Book if you don't already own one.

Be ready to fail... that's when the real learning takes place. Leave personal boundaries at home; be prepared to expose yourself musically and emotionally. Have a great time, meet a lot of people.

Relax, play-a-long with some standards. Just brush up on what you already know. I suppose the camp is in the next few days or weeks, don't let us take you off into confusion. There will be plenty of help once you get to the camp.

Years ago I went to a week long banjo camp loads of fun. Instruction in the morning, one on one in the afternoon and jamming after supper. You'll love it.

Maybe as a prep exercise, grab a fakebook and start playing through tunes. Chances are you'll familiarize yourself with something that will get called during the week.
