Not true. I need a 3rd quarter equivalent of a language to get my BS in physics at University of Washington. You can either take the classes, (101, 102, 103), take the placement test to get you above 103, be a "native speaker" (come to the US after age like 8 I think), or, like me, take one of the tests as a native speaker, totally blowing it away (in my case Polish).

I'm pretty sure you need 2 years to even get into UW, though. All my teachers told me that. Ever when I took 3rd year Japanese. So I don't think it's just a ploy.

So do i Really need a second language to get into berklee or a music school of some kind? Professional Bassist is my ultimate goal btw.

I wish I'd had enough sense to ask the kinds of questions you're asking many moons ago when I was in high school.

Looking back 40 years, I would DEFINITELY do everything I could to put as many different arrows in my metaphorical quiver as possible. I've made two major career changes and, in hindsight, it was extremely foolish to have limited my options by focusing so exclusively on the interests I had as an immature, though focused, youth.

If you're going into battle don't limit yourself to either a knife or a gun; take as many weapons as you can to assure you'll win. Life is an ongoing battle. Stock up on as many weapons (areas of expertise, foreign languages, math & science skills, self-management skills, logic & reasoning skills) as you can while you have the luxury of studying full-time because it's a lot tougher to try and acquire degrees and skills later in life.

Don't think of it as either learning to swim or taking a lifejacket with you when you go boating; instead, consider both! Giving yourself lots of options when you're young is always a good investment in your future - even if you can't see the sense in it right now.

I doubt it. Contact Berklee. Generally, for Berklee you need $$ and lots of it. However, if you're a really good player you can get a scholarship to go there and save lots of $$.

Well, I've got 2 BS degrees and 2 graduate degrees and almost enough credits for a 3rd BS degree. I was never required to take a foreign language. I did take one in high school and in college but they weren't required (except for elective credit). Like everything YMMV.

It's true. Really depends on what school you go to and when.

By the sound of it, it took you quite a while to get those degrees. Maybe they've just changed the requirements now?

Contact the school just to be sure.

I just posted links to the Univ of North Texas from their website. I got the links today. So they haven't changed the requirements. But, I guess it depends on each school.
