Presonus Audiobox USB96 shutting down randomly

I tried asking on the Presonus forum but no solution was offered that works. Might as well try asking here.

I got the presonus audiobox over a year ago. But when I use it as my playback device it will randomly stop working. A reboot of the PC is needed to get it back in working order. I have circumvented the issue by not using it for playback, using Voicemeeter to mix the inputs and outputs of my PC. I can still use it to record, without issues, when I play back the audio through my active USB monitors instead of the audiobox.

What I tried: reinstalling windows, reinstalling the audiobox drivers. I'm not looking to trouble shoot any further. I have exhausted all that presonus advised me to do.

Just wondering if anyone else has this issue with this interface and figured out a solution other than bypassing it with Voicemeeter. People on the presonus forums end up ditching the audiobox in favor of the Scarlett 2i2.

I would like to use the audiobox as main audiodevice for playback as well because the sound quality is better than the 16 bit 48k my usb speakers use. As in, it's audibly better when I play my bass.

Okay I'm stupid, but I think I fixed it. When reinstalling windows I installed the realtek drivers from the motherboard website. But these were outdated. Upgrading to a win 10 compatible driver did the job. Hope this helps someone else.

Okay that didn't work. Everything seemed fine until I watched something on facebook watch. I give up. Leaving this here in hopes of someone with this issues having figured it out.

uhm, I had an audiobox 22vsl ten years ago. it then started to stop working from time to time. then it stopped working completely. I gave it away and the new owner said, it worked perfectly for him. my computer had a dead mainboard in several months. I blamed the interface, but it ended up the computer was broken.

try it with another computer to be sure, it's not your case. if that doesn't help -- fill the support ticket on the presonus portal (not on the forums).

Good suggestion, I will look into that. As a matter of fact, since I've been using Voicemeeter I have experienced skipped audio on the playback channels. Not enough to be bothered about but enough to indicate something isn't working well. Perhaps it is this thing that makes my audiobox cut out intermittently. Is this similar to Jack for windows? I'm using Voicemeeter because it was easy to configure, perhaps I should get off my lazy ass and use a less polished program that does the job better. I've got my internal soundcard, my active speakers, and my audiobox all contending for a place in the mix. Perhaps your suggestion is a better solution.

Everyone does things differently, but if I'm using a PC for recording with a USB interface, I disable the mainboard's sound hardware in the PC's BIOS settings to avoid conflicts as to where audio is audio is routed. You can also disable your onboard sound hardware in Windows Control Panel ("Settings" on Windows 10). Make sure the Presonus is selected as the default audio device.

Make sure your DAW is set to use the ASIO driver for your Presonus. I would also recommend you buy some powered monitor speakers and connect them to the output of the Presonus and to not use those USB speakers.

Also, in device manager, find the USB hub or port and uncheck « allow this device to sleep » or similar wording…
