Problem after re wireing

Spectre gunner, my original question was whether removing the pots could have caused the problem. So glad to hear that's probably it. I'll get some copper shielding and try that. For now I've got it put back together and happy with how it looks at least.

If all the metal components are connected with a ground wire then the hum is likely due to a lack of shielding. Passive single coil pickups are sensitive and vulnerable to picking up a hum and removing the pots and resistor can make it more vulnerable.

I don't see any shielding at all in the cavity or pickguard. I'm certain that if you properly shield it and ground the shielding with a dedicated wire you will eliminate the hum problem. I wouldn't be surprised if it sounded better too which I presume was the point of removing the pots in the first place.
It's not a single coil, though. And there's some foil on the pickguard, it looks like.

Sorry, not trying to call you dumb. I was a bit bitter that day and my mental filter was broken. I was legitimately curious, because I've purchased two used basses that had been "repaired" with wire nuts and it only created issues more than fixed it.
There's a good chance that the wire nuts are indeed the problem. Wire nuts are usually made for household wiring where you have nice thick wires. Pickup wires are hardly that thick.
