problem with my shuttle 6.0: protect-circuit

hi folks,

i am the glad owner of a shuttle 6.0 which works fantastic with all of my tech-soundsystems cabinets (4ohm, 6ohm and 8ohm).

i recently aquired a HOS Tandem 2x12 cabinet for my shuttle (very small and light yet good sounding). it delivers 500watts into 8ohm (2 12"speakers á 4ohm in series). it works flawlessly with my db750 and my ebs td650.

as soon as i connect it to my shuttle the red warning light on the shuttle flashes up and the protection-circuit is activated. all i can hear is a little beep-signal comming from the cabinet in intervals. as soon as i disconnect amp and cabinet the protection switches off and the amp - connected to another cabinet - works without any problem.

as both amp and cabinet work perfectly with my other components (each amp with each cabinet) it cannot be a fault on amp or cabinet. i have already checked the cabinet, it is wired in series so it must have 8ohms. the shuttle should handle that without any problem but it doesn´t. seems as if they do not like each other.

can anyone help?

thanks!

I had asked if you were in Germany because we had not heard of this problem before. ...so, upon seeing your thread, I called our tech.

He asked "is he in Germany by any chance?"

We're reasonably confident that there is an issue with your cabinet. I apologize, but this type of thing is VERY hard to diagnose over the internet. Add to that, that I'm not familiar with your cabinet.

I would bring the whole rig to a recognized amp tech in your area. I'm afraid I don't know if there is a Genz Benz specific one as they are set up by the importer.

Please PM me and I will try my best to support you in troubleshooting. Do you have a digital camera and can take a photo of the back of your cabinet's connector plate? There are some small speaker manufacturers who use non-standard connector wiring and there are a couple of combinations that can cause issues with our (and other manufacturer's) amps. It has to do with trying to manufacturer a cabinet that accomodates bridging of an amp with a standard cable by jumpering pins that should not be jumpered in any normal operation. This applies to the PA world too, which is where I have first seen the problem.

hasbeen and agedhorse,

thank you very much so far.

i have checked the speakon jacks and they are definitly not the cause of the problem (i connected the cable directly to the internal wiring of the cabinet with the same result).

a local technician is of the opinion that the digital power-section might have a problem with the frequency-soft (?). it is extreme difficult for me to translate to you what he told me. he says the signal might go back and forth between the amp and the cabinet which causes the digital-power-section to "swing up" and then shut down. he was talking about broadcasting in ukw-frequencies ...

i devided the frequency-soft from the rest of the cabinet-circuit and now it works - without tweeter of course. the owner of HOS - mick - is also very helpful, he will send me a different frequency soft (monacor if says something to you). i hope i works then.

i will tell you if that solved the problem.

regards,

arne

Please, I would very much like to know more about this "frequency-soft" feature of this cabinet. What is it, what is it supposed to do, how it is supposed to work, and why is causes the amp to see an "illegal" load. I have some ideas, but without more information they are just ideas.

I have not been able to find any detailed information about this manufacturer's products, specifically the one you mention, and would like to know more.

Sounds like he's thinking of standing wave reflections? I haven't heard of that with audio frequencies.

Yes, I think there is a problem with the crossover, maybe a bad part or miswired part, and I suggest asking the technician to look closely for a capacitive load on the amplifier. Maybe a capacitor installed across the input of the crossover of .22uF would cause this type of fault. It may also cause instability or oscillation of other amplifiers as well.

thank you all very much.

mick from HOS will send me a new crossover.

yes, the customer service of both - genz benz and HOS - is fantastic.

i will report as soon as the new crossover (a monacor) is installed.

Yes, please let us know how this works.

UPDATE:

today i tried the cabinet with the new crossover and now everything works fine. it seems that the other crossover and the power section didn´t like each other.

thank you all very much for you help! i really appreciate it.

with the best regards,

sandmann
