Problem with string length

Hi guys, I have in the shop a 5 string bass (5 in line headstock). The bass is 34" and 24 frets bass jazz style similar to Sadowsky, Alleva Coppollo or Fender 5 string. I installed Daddario "SUPERLONG" and no problem with the first 4 strings, however with the 5º string which is 0.130, this thickness reaches the tuner because is too long and is impossible to screw om the tuner hole.

I purchased another 0.130 this time "LONG SCALE", the problem persists. I have a fender jazz bass 4 string and tried to put the string only for testing the lenght, and is perfect, 92 cm. The string passes the bonenut about 15 mm and becomes thinner and is perfect.

The question is is there a 0.130 5º string standard (not long scale or superlong). If you can help me, I'd ve very grateful. Thanks in advance.

I enclose two pics, the first is with the "long scale" Daddario string, the second pic with a red vertical line shows the ideal string length, I mean, need that the string becomes thinner from the red line to the tuner. Is the measurement of my 4 string Fender jazz bass.

Are those D'Addario XL Nickels? Or do you prefer stainless steel rounds? Are you willing to mix-and-match brands?

The standard "long scale" by most companies are 37"-37.25" in winding length (ball end to taper), including D'Addario. Only a few companies I know of who still make B strings with 36.5" winding length.

Ahh the eternal struggle and a big reason why I love 3+2 headstocks (or 2+3).

Stringing through body will also fix this, is that an option?

Other than that, measure the string from the ball end to your red mark and get strings wound to that length. Can you provide us that measurement?

Other than that, measure the string from the ball end to your red mark and get strings wound to that length. Can you provide us that measurement?

According to the OP, the ideal length is "92 cm", which works out to be 36.22". So, it would have to be the "old" long scale of 36.5".

Good point, it might work just fine. I had just assumed that the B string broke when it was wound up.

Finally I screwed the B saddle a little bit towards the bottom of the bass. I guess this issue is due to the 5 in line in the headstock...

Let us all repeat the mantra, which applies whether top mount or through body:
1) measure from the ball anchor to the tuner side of the nut.
2) measure from the ball anchor to the middle of the (in this case) B string tuner post
3) purchase a set of strings that has a winding or speaking length between these two measurements.

I am reposting the closeup picture of the headstock. Notice the speaking length of the B string stops and stairsteps down between the nut and the tuner post. This is the way it should be.
