Problem with Svt4

My first post here, and although I have been playing bass for about 13 years, I am awful when it comes to equipment.

I use an aerodyne jazz bass and a svt-4 and a 810e.

I recently have noticed that my sound is not as clear as it should be. i guess a better way to explain this would be to say that it doesn't have hardly any definition. it just seems like all low end. at louder volumes it seems pretty distorted really.

I found out today about the mono bridge cable but I am assuming that this wouldn't have anything to with actual tone? am i correct? this wouldn't of caused any damage to anything would it since I have not been using that cable.

is there any kind of a rule as to when to change the preamp tubes? i have had this head for probably 4 years now and was bought used and don't know if it had been done before i bought it anytime.

I play in a cover band doing 80s & 90s stuff so i like a clean warm tone and am currently not getting that. any possible suggestions as to how to clean it up?

How do you set up the EQ etc?

If you happen to be using the "ultra-low" switch, turn it off.

It doesn't seem to make a difference if I have the ultra low on or off. Its just really bassy either way.

I have the EQ like a frown starting from the left a little below halfway up.

I agree with Jerrold here too. The Ultra LO switches kinda give a false sense of security or tone. They sound nice when you're not slamming the amp hard with a band but really should be disengaged when the amp is being pushed. In fact, I've always believed that the harder an amp is pushed, the less EQ should be used.

As for the mono bridged cable, it won't affect your "tone" per se but it does certainly affect the headroom of the amp which can have the same outcome. Also, if you were trying to use a standard Neutrik Speakon in the Mono Bridged output, and the selector switch was set for Mono, it could have an adverse affect on the power section.

i just went and bought the nl4fc neutrik tip so i will see where that gets me.

im still curious about the preamp tubes though. do these need to be changed after a certain amount of time or any signs that they would need to be changed?
