Project Bass! (Yamaha RBX260)

Hi all,

Finally joined TB after years of lurking. This if my first proper thread!

So. I've got a Yamaha RBX260 (my first bass) hanging around. After a recent purchase, this bass is no longer my backup bass, so I'm free to do whatever I please with it!

I enjoy modifying things, so the main goal of this project is simply to have fun and learn.

SO! SUGGESTIONS!

Background:
I own a Fender Jazz Deluxe V (which I've put tens of hours into modifying), and a MM Stingray 5 (HH). I don't really own and P-ish basses apart from this Yammy. I'm actually not a huge fan of P basses [ :O ] but as a professional I understand the need for them in certain circumstances, and would like to have one on hand. I'm very comfortable with anything electronic, slightly less so with woodwork.

Possibilities I've considered:
-Put a nice P pickup in it, then I'd (sorta) have a P bass for those special occasions.
-Route a hole for a J pickup (and put one in)
-De-fret it (requiring the previous point - I've never really understood fretless P-only basses)
-Put some funky other pickup in it (piezo? midi?)
-Put a pre-amp in it
-Paint it something cool looking
-Replace the nut/bridge/tuners

Please feel free to comment on the above suggestions or offer more!

I have a RBX260F FRETLESS. I LOVE the sounds that thing makes. I got it for next to nothing on ebay. I am going to do a total body refinish (mine is the Natural Alder finish), put some Seymour Duncan SPB-3 Quarter Pounders in it, and replace all the pots and wiring while I am in it. I have a guy locally that is a tech for a bunch of touring bands. He builds Custom Brass Nuts for next to nothing, so I will have that done, also. The RBX basses are such Effortless players, IMO. It would be a GREAT base for a P-Bass project without spending much $$$ at all. IMO. Best of Luck, let us know what you decide!

I know its an old af thread but I'm curious about whatever came of your RBX 260? Did you complete your project?
